The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) has created this open data portal to support local planning with technical, data, and intergovernmental resources. The work SEMCOG does improves the quality of the region’s water, makes the transportation system safer and more efficient, revitalizes communities, and spurs economic development.
Conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) is the authoritative source on the travel behavior of the American public. It is the only source of national data that allows one to analyze trends in personal and household travel. It includes daily non-commercial travel by all modes, including characteristics of the people traveling, their household, and their vehicles. The NHTS has been conducted in 1983, 1990, 1995, 2001, 2009, and 2017.
The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) is based on a 3-year data collection project conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). LTCCS is the first-ever national study to attempt to determine the critical events and associated factors that contribute to serious large truck crashes allowing DOT and others to implement effective countermeasures to reduce the occurrence and severity of these crashes. The LTCCS documents 1,070 major crashes with approximately 1,000 variables on each crash obtained through driver, passenger, and witness interviews; crash scene, truck, and driver inspections, police reports; hospital records; and coroners' reports.
The City of Detroit Open Data Portal allows access to datasets, maps, charts, and files and documents on City of Detroit government operations and programs, public safety (Detroit Police Department, Detroit Fire Department, and Detroit Department of Homeland Security), property and parcels, schools and educational institutions, transportation, public health, and permits.
Annual bridge inspection data submitted to the FHWA by states, federal agencies, and tribal governments in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards and the Recording and Coding Guide for the Inventory and Appraisal of the Nations Bridges. Additionally, element level bridge condition inspection data submitted annually to the FHWA by states and federal agencies, as required for all bridges on the National Highway System.
A nationwide census providing yearly data on fatal injuries suffered in motor vehicle traffic crashes. FARS data can be used to answer a multitude of questions concerning the safety of vehicles, drivers, traffic situations, roadways, and environmental conditions.
The Federal Transit Administration's National Transit Database (NTD) records the financial, operating and asset condition of transit systems. After data reporting was required by Congress in 1974, the NTD was set up to be the repository of data about the financial, operating and asset conditions of American transit systems. The NTD is designed to support local, state and regional planning efforts and help governments and other decision-makers make multi-year comparisons and perform trend analyses. It contains a wealth of information such as agency funding sources, inventories of vehicles and maintenance facilities, safety event reports, measures of transit service provided and consumed, and data on transit employees. Those receiving funding from the Urbanized Area Formula Program (5307) or Rural Formula Program (5311) – are required to submit data to the NTD in uniform categories. More than 660 transit providers report to the NTD through the Internet-based system.
