  • National Black Politics Study, 1993
    WSU Dataset

    Authors
    Ronald Brown
    Description

This study was designed to provide information on attitudes and opinions regarding a number of issues of importance to Black Americans. Topics included the performance of President Bill Clinton, the economic condition of Black Americans, and what respondents thought ought to be done to improve the condition of Black people. Questions regarding Black women and their role in the Black community were also asked. In addition, the role and extent of religion in Black politics was investigated. Respondents also provided information about their political self-identification and their community and political involvement, as well as their feelings toward various political leaders, political groups, and national policies. Demographic information on respondents includes sex, age, education, marital status, income, and occupation and industry.

    Description

The prediction of calmodulin-binding (CaM-binding) proteins plays a very important role in the fields of biology and biochemistry, because the calmodulin protein binds and regulates a multitude of protein targets affecting different cellular processes. Computational methods that can accurately identify CaM-binding proteins and CaM-binding domains would accelerate research in calcium signaling and calmodulin function. Short-linear motifs (SLiMs), on the other hand, have been effectively used as features for analyzing protein-protein interactions, though their properties have not been utilized in the prediction of CaM-binding proteins. In this study, researchers propose a new method for the prediction of CaM-binding proteins based on both the total and average scores of known and new SLiMs in protein sequences using a new scoring method called sliding window scoring (SWS) as features for the prediction module. A dataset of 194 manually curated human CaM-binding proteins and 193 mitochondrial proteins have been obtained and used for testing the proposed model.

    Description

It has long been thought that biomedical doctoral students pursue careers primarily as tenure-track/tenured faculty at research institutions. Recent reports showed, however, that the majority of biomedical doctoral alumni engage in a variety of careers. Wayne State University (WSU) undertook a project to understand the career trajectories of its biomedical doctoral alumni to create programs to better prepare its students for careers in multiple pathways. Data were collected on career outcomes of WSU's biomedical doctoral alumni who graduated in a 15-year period from 1999-2014. Careers were classified into three tiers by Employment Sector, Career Types and Job Functions and career paths were examined by alumni gender, race, U.S. citizenship status, and association with certain academic characteristics. Several statistically significant differences in career paths among all demographics were found.
